Overview

The Shtooka Project brings together both science and education, to achieve its main purpose of establishing free audio collections of words and phrases in different languages through the recording of native speakers.

The Shtooka Project is also developing educational programs (TICE: Technologies of Information and Communication for Education ) to take advantage of these collections.

  • 11/01/2010 : Some new collections
    The second half of 2009 has been rich in new recordings. With collections in Mandarin, Ukrainian (words and proverbs), Serbian, English (British and American), Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), French (proverbs with the voice of Tristan Nitot) ... In all, more than 17 000 new recordings have been made since August 2009!
  • 06/12/2009 : Shtooka on Radio Libertarian
    In early October, Nicolas Vion had the opportunity to speak about the Shtooka Project under the program "Symbiosis", hosted by Luc Fievet. Here’s a podcast of the show (only available in French). Have fun listening!
  • 08/08/2009 : Three new audio collections
    Three new collections have been recorded this week. Thank you to Svitlana for his Ukrainian recordings, to Sasha for the Serbian recordings and Nitot for French proverbs!
  • 27/07/2009 : Shtooka Project on Framablog!
    The Framablog devotes an article to Shtooka Project! Have fun reading!
  • 15/07/2009 : Small collection of Arabic words
    A small collection of Arabic words, recorded by native Moroccan speakers, in Nantes, at the RMLL 2009 is now available! This collection is the result of the first collaboration with the Moroccan Association ALIS (Computing And Linux Association Souss).
  • 08/04/2009 : New collection of Wolof words
    The collection of Wolof words that we recorded with Mamadou is now available for download on http://swac-collections.org. Furthermore it is possible, as with other collections, to listen to the recordings individually directly on the site. With this collection we have just crossed the symbolic threshold of 80 000 free recordings! Congratulations to all!
  • 02/04/2009 : New collection of German words
    A new collection recorded earlier this week by Bernadette and Katrin Boxberger is available for download on the http://swac-collections.org! This package contains about 800 recordings. This is the vocabulary related to mathematics and expressions like "die von f Abteilung an der Stelle x", "Exponentialwert der Basis von 6 zur 3" ... The audio quality is impeccable!

The association

Since July 2009, the Shtooka Project has established a non-profit organisation, with the object of creating free audio collections of words and expressions as well as developing software tools to exploit these collections. We need community contributions to achieve these goals. Don't hesitate to help us either by joining this project or by providing contributions (or both).

Shtooka Party on February the 13th, 2010

The Shtooka association has organised an afternoon presentation on Saturday, February the 13th, 2010 at "La Cantina" (Paris's second district) from 13.00 to 18.00.

Paris Meetings

Every 2 weeks, the association gathers in a Paris cafe to raise awareness, discuss upcoming projects, take stock of ongoing projects, all in a friendly atmosphere. Come and meet us. The next meeting will take place at the Pouchla café "(10 Mandar Rd, in the second arrondissement of Paris, near the Montorgueil Rd): * Tuesday, February 2 at 18.30 See you there!

SWAC Metatags

SWAC Metatags is a field naming scheme which enables the storage of information used by audio collections of words and sentences. These collections can be useful for teaching and can illustrate electronic dictionaries.

Software

Swac Tools

Swac Tools is a set of programs for GNU/Linux written in C++ that allows you to get the most out of Shtooka words audio collections (SWAC). At the moment, there are 4 programs:

  • swac-get which enables you to load into a SQLite3 database of audio collections.
  • swac-explore which allows you to browse the database and listen audio files.
  • swac-play a simple command line player for SWAC audio collections.
  • swac-scan a Vorbis Comment tags and Id3v2 tags scanner that enables the generation of XML indexes for SWAC audio collections.

Shtooka Explorer

Shtooka Explorer is a program that enables the browsing of audio collections of words (SWAC). These collections of words can be on your own computer but you can also get sound files directly from the Internet. There are currently more than 75 000 words in our server (fra, eng, dut, deu, chi, swe, rus, bel, ukr).

Shtooka Recorder

Shtooka Recorder is a program for Microsoft Windows which allows automated recording of the pronunciation of many words, expressions, and/or sentences from a list. (One can record an average of 500 words in 20 minutes). It can save audio files in the following formats: .wav .ogg .flac (including Vorbis Comment tag).

This program is distributed and licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Shtooka Repeat

Shtooka Repeat is a program for Windows (2000, XP...) that enables the creation of little audio dictionaries using SWAC audio collections. This can help you to learn vocabulary.
